M&CCE Exhibitor Projects - Kaymac
In this latest focus on successful projects undertaken by exhibitors at the 2019 Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Expo (M&CCE) we turn our attention to specialist sub-sea Marine Civil engineering company, Kaymac Marine and Civil Engineering Ltd (Kaymac).
The project in focus is the completion of Phase 1 of the lock gate removal at Swansea Dry Docks.
Commissioned by Swansea Dry Docks Ltd, Kaymac was instructed to un-step the existing lock gates and transport them within the operational dry dock so that essential repair works could be carried out.
The gates were initially installed in 1922 and due to their age and structural condition, care had to be taken to ensure no further damage occurred which could potentially de-stabilize the gates and affect their buoyancy during the un-stepping procedure.
Prior to the un-stepping procedure, Kaymac divers carried out an initial structural and dimensional survey of the gates, cill and pintle to determine their watertight integrity and structural condition. This survey also confirmed the lifting points and any damage to the existing cill that could have an impact on the lifting operation.
A confined space/diving survey was then carried out to determine the dimensions of the tidal and buoyancy chambers, which would assist in calculating the weight of each leaf and therefore the buoyancy conditions that would be required for the works operations.
